Poole’s rich history is revealed in Poole’s Museum on Poole Quay which has four floors of galleries from pirates to potteries and has free entrance and next to the museum is Poole’s Information Centre where you can pick up a map of Poole’s Cockle Trail walk.
The trail was opened in 1998 to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Poole’s ancient charter. The map shows you how to follow the numbered cockle signs set in the ground to tell you the history of Poole.
A fun way to explore Poole old town and quay is to follow the ‘Murder Mystery Treasure Trail’. The booklet of the trail is also available from Poole Information Centre.
The quay is part of Poole’s ‘old town’ and the area is full of traditional pubs, restaurants, cafes and gift shops. The Poole Arms on the quay is its oldest watering hole and has great views overlooking the quay and an extensive fish menu.
On the opposite side of the quay is the Sunseeker base where you can see multi million pound boats being built for their millionaire owners!
Compton Acres in Canford Cliffs is recognised as one of the most important ornamental gardens in England. The garden was created in 1920. Since 2003 the gardens have undergone a great deal of development including the construction of a gift shop, plant centre, café and tearoom and the award winning Italian Villa.
